Helen Burkhart Mayfield (1939–1997) lived most of her life in and around the Austin area. She was extremely creative through visual art, composing music, and dance. She started the first interpretive dance troupe in Austin in the 1960’s. In her last years, Helen was unhoused and was known to fashion elaborate headpieces and gowns for herself and stop traffic with her performances. Her drawings reflect a beautifully eloquent yet troubled and highly imaginative artist.
