HENRY MCDONALD
Henry McDonald (b. 1961) lives and works in Austin, Texas. He works across an array of mediums, including drawing, collage, and ceramics. While maintaining a unique voice, McDonald finds inspiration in the work of folk art predecessors, returning often to his dogeared copy of the Slotin Auction catalog to draw a portrait in the style of Lee Godie or an animal in the style of Bill Traylor. Most recently, McDonald has created a series of collaged “quilts” from paper, inspired by the bold, vibrant quilts of self-taught artist Sarah Mary Taylor. These collages pay tribute to McDonald’s mother, a prolific quilter. McDonald’s goal is for his work to reach as many people as possible; to that end, he has collaborated with local brands such as The Texas Playboys and Hold Out Brewing, who featured his artwork on the label of his eponymous beer, “Love, Henry.”
