Christopher Bame was born on June 1, 1955 in Burlington, Vermont. Born premature and deaf, Bame was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and developmental delays as a young child, and he spent the majority of his childhood in an institutional setting. Having no formal education, he expressed artistic interest from a young age and used art as a way to communicate with his peers, convey his needs, and tell stories about his day. His narrative paintings and drawings are a form of storytelling, often autobiographical, and at once whimsical, vulnerable, and introspective. Bame loves home improvement shows and likes to design homes, blueprints, and maps. He lives with his older sister in Marion, IN where he maintains a steady art practice.
