Visiting Artist Program
In January 2026, we launched our Visiting Artist Program, a new addition to our core programming. Through this program, we bring two community artists each year into our studio to skill-share and collaborate with our Studio Artists in a four-month-long residency. Our inaugural Visiting Artist was Sean Patrick Carney, who introduced our artists to papier-mâché and co-curated our spring exhibition, The REALLY BIG (and really small) Drink Show. Our second Visiting Artist, Rebecca Marino, brought the art of rug tufting to the studio; rugs created by our Studio Artists during her residency were featured in a group exhibtion, Good Fortune, that opened in September 2026. Visiting Artists receive studio space, a stipend, and a studio budget, and each residency culminates in an exhibition featuring work by our Studio Artists created during the Visiting Artist’s time at SAGE. Current economic and political conditions often make artists and other cultural producers feel powerless and disenfranchised. What occurred to me repeatedly as I worked with the artists and team at SAGE is that their model provides a space to witness change and impact in real-time. In the course of a studio session, the artists and I would discover a new way to approach solving a material problem, which would visibly build their confidence, which would lead to smiles and celebrations, which would ripple out to everyone else working the studio. Visitors to the studio would feel the joy reverberating off of the artists and purchase their work, which empowered the artists further to produce and share more and more work. SAGE is a beautiful local ecosystem that contextualizes its participants first and foremost as working artists through thoughtful exhibitions, serious collectable editions, and press coverage It was the best residency I’ve ever done, no question.
